Bagpipes | Design | Making | Repair & Maintenance

I make bagpipes for musicians who actually play them.

My instruments are shaped by how they are used in real musical situations, the traditions they come from, and what I learn by playing them in those contexts, learning from older instruments and their histories, and refining them in the workshop.

I work across a small number of related bagpipe types, rooted in the Atlantic and Baltic traditions of Europe, each developed for a specific musical context and way of playing.

Folk Instruments

Rooted in living traditions

Folk bagpipe traditions are shaped by long histories of use, regional practice, and shared musical language.

My folk instruments emerge from close engagement with these traditions. By identifying their most musically relevant and commonly shared features, I develop coherent instruments that reflect how they are actually played today, without freezing them into historical snapshots.

The result is a reliable and functional bagpipe for working musicians: stable in tuning, comfortable to play, and adaptable to individual needs. These instruments are firmly rooted in tradition, while shaped by contemporary workshop practice and real musical use.

Performance Instruments

Shaped by how musicians play today

Performance instruments are custom bagpipes made for specific playing situations, developed in close conversation with the musician.

These instruments are typically based on a clearly recognisable folk bagpipe type, but refined and adapted to meet particular performance needs. Design choices are shaped by how the instrument will be used, for example:

  • on stage or indoors
  • alone or with other instruments
  • acoustically or with amplification

Attention is given to aspects musicians deal with in practice, such as projection, flexibility, stability, comfort, tuning behaviour, and expanded fingering possibilities.

The result is a high-end, musically grounded instrument that remains faithful in character and appearance, while offering solutions suited to contemporary performance contexts. The instrument adapts to the situation, without losing its identity.

Historical Instruments

Grounded in historical sources

Historical instruments are built in direct response to documented historical bagpipes preserved in museums and private collections.

Through long-term research and hands-on measurement work, I develop instruments tied to specific historical examples, rather than to generalized or typological models. Each instrument is informed by close study of original sources and by practical experience of how such instruments function in sound and performance.

These instruments are intended for musicians, researchers, and collectors who seek a close and accountable relationship to historical material. They are made to be played, while also serving as careful material interpretations of historical evidence, developed with respect for the original sources and the limits of what can be responsibly reconstructed.
