Teaching Across Disciplines
Gonçalo Cruz’s educational practice brings together music, design, artistic research and cultural heritage, drawing on his experience as a musician, instrument maker and designer.
His teaching connects theoretical inquiry with practical experimentation, combining historical investigation, creative processes and hands-on experience.
Alongside instrumental teaching, he contributes to academic and public programmes through lectures, seminars and presentations, fostering interdisciplinary exchange and making specialised knowledge accessible to wider audiences.
Teaching Philosophy”
The pursuit of mental and physical balance has been a constant throughout my life.
My interest in the performing arts and design has long been accompanied by a fascination with Eastern philosophy and martial arts. I began practising Judo at sixteen, later exploring meditation, Tai Chi, Yoga and, particularly, Aikido.
Over time, I came to recognise how deeply these experiences influenced the way I teach. Whether helping a student develop control over a musical instrument, introducing a design problem or navigating the frustrations of learning, I return to similar principles: attention, patience, repetition and awareness.
Architecture taught me to recognise patterns and relationships. Design taught me to look beyond the individual object and consider the processes through which things are conceived, made and repeated.
I have come to regard teaching in much the same way. It is a balance between structure and freedom, discipline and exploration, tradition and invention.

Bagpipe Teaching
.
His teaching combines instrumental technique, musical interpretation and an understanding of the cultural traditions associated with the instrument. Particular attention is given to developing a solid technical foundation while encouraging individual musical expression.
He offers individual tuition and group workshops, both in person and online, tailored to the needs and interests of students.

I’m a bagpipe teacher at SibA!
It is wonderful news that I have been asked to teach bagpipes at the Sibelius Academy. The reason to embark on the laborious process of doctoral research is, in my view, to give back to civil society. My research on the bagpipes, only makes sense, if embraced by the...
